Before 2005, Dong Hoa was the eastern part of the old Tuy Hoa district.

Dong Hoa district was established on May 16, 2005 according to Decree No. 62/2005/ND-CP of the Government[3].

When newly separated, Dong Hoa district had 26,959 hectares of natural area and 115,246 people, with 10 affiliated administrative units including communes: Hoa Thanh, Hoa Tan Dong, Hoa Xuan Tay, Hoa Xuan Dong, Hoa Xuan Nam. , Hoa Vinh, Hoa Tam, Hoa Hiep Central, Hoa Hiep Nam, Hoa Hiep North.

On August 6, 2013, Hoa Vinh and Hoa Hiep Trung communes were converted into two towns with corresponding names[4], the district capital of Dong Hoa district is located in Hoa Vinh town.

On November 26, 2019, the Ministry of Construction issued Decision No. 994/QD-BXD recognizing Dong Hoa district as a class IV urban area.[5]

By 2020, Dong Hoa district will have 2 towns: Hoa Vinh (district capital), Hoa Hiep Trung and 8 communes: Hoa Hiep Bac, Hoa Hiep Nam, Hoa Tam, Hoa Tan Dong, Hoa Thanh, Hoa Xuan Dong, Hoa Xuan South, Hoa Xuan Tay.

On April 22, 2020, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution No. 931/NQ-UBTVQH14 of 2020 on the establishment of Dong Hoa town and wards of Dong Hoa town (the resolution takes effect from April 1, 2020). June 2020)[1]. Accordingly:

Established Dong Hoa town based on the entire area and population of Dong Hoa district.
Convert 2 towns: Hoa Vinh, Hoa Hiep Trung and 3 communes: Hoa Hiep Bac, Hoa Hiep Nam, Hoa Xuan Tay into 5 wards with corresponding names.
After its establishment, Dong Hoa town had 5 wards and 5 communes like today.
